This is some of the best loss information I have seen to date. I find it to be very accurate and I plan on visiting the authors site.

Hey Lex,

I think that's your Corsair in the 3rd paragraph:

04634 crashed near Great Lakes, NC Dec 1944. Pilot bailed out but was killed. Aircraft landed itself relatively intact nearby. Wreckage acquired by civilian user as N4634 and stored.

Richard, that is a pretty sorry record..!?! I read the first hundred or so losses and skimmed the rest. I had heard vague accounts of a poor Korean showing, seems to be backed up here I guess. I wonder if more were lost to operation then combat per se? Good thing they had a good WWII record anyway (kill ratio that is, and not reflected here obviously). Nice little site here btw :D

From what I have heard, more were lost through operations than combat. The Corsair was not a very forgiving aircraft so I suppose that's one reason it was known as the "Ensign eliminator"

Many of the squadron losses attributed to VMF-214 are incorrect.
