Re: First of the Production Birdcages- F4U-1 WIP

Can it really get any better than this?... I think not!

btw, I hold the record for tardy thread updates so next to me you're Mr. Prolific... Time to paint some more numbers.

Really appreciate having all of this in one place.

Re: Grandfather and his plane

Nice piece of family history. Judging by the flat windscreen, I would guess the photo was likely taken after WW2. Not sure when the round windscreens were phased out. Not to many -4's saw service before the end of the war and I think they all had the round windscreens. Looks to be a practice bomb ha...

Re: Lulubelle or Lucybelle? Here's Proof

There are also a couple of photos in Robert McClurg's book 'On Boyington's Wing' with McClurg as well. One side shot like these that only show part of the name and an angled shot from the front quarter that shows the full name. I'd venture that a good number of the pilots in the squadron had their p...

Re: UNDER CONSTRUCTION: Vought F4U-1D, USS BENNINGTON, 1945

Amazing work David. Tamiya did a great job on these, if you didn't specify in the heading that this is 1/72 scale it could easily be mistaken for their 1/48. Just wait 'til they do one in 32nd. ;)

Re: The First Goodyear FG-1 Corsair

Hi David,
I have the Musciano reprint and found the photo you are referring to, I can scan it and send it to you if that helps. I'll also look through some of my other books to see if anything turns up.

Re: First of the Production Birdcages- F4U-1 WIP

Rule #37 in model building David is don't apologize for flaunting awesome work, it's a sign of low self esteem. :D

I'm curious about what you have going on with those gun ports.

Re: Vought F4U-2, VMF (N)-532, Roi-Namur Atoll, 1944 (Tamiya

Oh now David you know we'll never get tired of seeing this one. Those colours and that nice soft demarkation are pretty much perfect.

Re: Project: Obsessive Corsair Disorder

Thanks d-bot, been catching up with long overdue progress pics here before I pull out the stops and finish it up. I'll try to get the wheel well and oil cooler shots up by this weekend.

Re: Project: Obsessive Corsair Disorder

The final result. A lot of work, but this is the way I like it.

Cowl/engine finished

Tomorrow, carburetor duct work and oil coolers. Maybe the main wheel bay as well.

Re: Project: Obsessive Corsair Disorder

Engine and cowl continued. Painted and weathered cowl interior. According to my best research, the inside of the cowl ring on -1's and -1A's was painted the same colour as the bottom of the aircraft. Being that this -1A is from the first batch it should be white. A birdcage would be light grey. I we...

Re: Project: Obsessive Corsair Disorder

Glad you like it Richard. The parts manual was especially helpful with the detailing the main gear and bays. Today the engine and cowl. 4377455578_b1e547c460_o.jpg I think the pushrod tubes were made from .020 styrene. The tape strips represent the neoprene seal where the top and bottom halves of th...

Re: Corsair restoration Trumpeter 1/32

That is amazing work Adrian! I'll be watching with great interest. I have a few each of the Trumpeter and Revell kits in the stash so I will be taking notes. The metal landing gear should do a good job of holding up the extra weight of all that metal. I don't have much detail information on the -4 b...

Re: Planes of Fame F4U-1

I think where some people get fooled is by the rear windows. Those were added during the restoration. I have a photo from 1970 without the windows and all the fabric is in tatters. I'll have to look back at my Baa Baa Black Sheep dvd's to see if the windows were there already. They are present in th...

Re: Planes of Fame F4U-1

This Corsair is also one of only three bird-cage Corsairs left in the world (although it has the bubble top installed). Sorry, this is not and never was a birdcage model. Planes of Fame's Corsair BuNo 17799 falls in the middle of the first lot of -1A's 17456-18121. I recall reading once that they w...

Re: Recommendations re: E&M Manual?

Hi tityus, I have been following your thread with great interest, sounds like a fun project. From what I have seen of the E&M manual there is little in the way of dimensions, mostly photos and illustrations much like the pilots manual but much larger ( not the pictures, just the number of pages ...

That's great, I have a couple of pictures to load up with mine as it is a visual question. Will try to get it done tomorrow, if not by the end of the week.

Re: Jim Hill Official Website

I know what you mean about Lucybelle, Bob McClurg had some photos of himself with this same plane in his book "On Boyington's Wing". It wouldn't surprise me if several others in the squadron had pics taken with this plane at the same time. BTW, is it to late to add another question for Col...

Re: Jim Hill Official Website

Wow! That's great news. Probably the best site on the subject yet. Lots of great photos I have never seen before. I think I'll be in for at least one signed 8x10.

Sad to see so many of them have passed on in the last few years.

Thanks for intro Richard,

Regards,

Re: Rare Corsair Rescued

Re: need information on the light of a F4U-D1

One more thing to add, the gun camera window in the right wing is centered on the leading edge while the light window in the left wing is below the centerline of the wing.

MMM, a camera in each wing... now that would be my kind of 3D movie!

Good luck with your project Chris.

The gun camera is in the right wing in the same position. It looks like a mirror image, exactly the same but on the other side.

Re: need information on the light of a F4U-D1

Yes, right next to the wing break and below the centerline of the leading edge there is a rectangular clear panel flush with the wing profile.
